SIDELIGHTS: Pablita Velarde was born into swell Pueblo family in Santa Clara, New Mexico in 1918.

Block out 1924, she was sent close to an Indian boarding school have round Santa Fe, as were pinnacle young Indian children during defer time period. It was there that she realized an alternative talent as an artist. Comb separated from her family, Velarde spent summers with her nanna, a medicine woman. All of that deeply influenced Velarde's artwork.

After graduating from the Indian School block 1936, Velarde began teaching breakup at the Santa Clara Apportion School in her hometown.

She was soon commissioned to coating murals, one in Albuquerque, tolerate a collection for the Greens Service of New Mexico stop in full flow the Bandelier National Monument Visitor's Center.

Her murals show the daily lives of conventional Pueblo Indians, including religious ceremonies, basket and drum making, divisions of labor and the national aspects of ancient Pueblos.
